Are online PDF converters safe? What happens to your files

公開日 2026-11-08

PDFs often hold the most sensitive paperwork in your life: contracts, tax forms, payslips, passports. Before you drop one onto a website, it is worth knowing where it goes.

How most online tools work

Many web-based PDF services upload your file to their servers, process it there, and let you download the result. Their policies usually describe how long files are kept and when they are deleted. That can be reasonable, but it does mean a copy of your document exists on someone else's infrastructure, even if only temporarily.

What to check before you upload

  • Does the site say files are deleted, and after how long?
  • Is the connection encrypted (https)?
  • Who operates the service and where is it based?
  • Do you need an account, and what do they do with your email?

The alternative: processing in your browser

Modern browsers can merge, split, compress, convert and even run OCR on your own device. Tools built this way never receive your files. If you disconnect from the internet after the page loads, many operations still work, which is a simple way to verify the claim.

What we do differently

Intelli File processes PDFs in your browser. The server only receives a small usage counter, the tool name and an anonymous or account ID, so we can apply daily limits. We do not receive file names, file contents or page text.

A sensible habit

Use browser-based tools for sensitive documents, check the privacy policy of any service that uploads files, and never send a document you cannot afford to leak to a site you do not trust.
