How to password protect a PDF (and remove the password later)
Publicado 2026-11-08
Emailing a contract, payslip or ID scan as a plain PDF is risky. A password adds a strong layer of protection, and it takes less than a minute.
Protect a PDF
- Open Protect PDF and drop the file.
- Type a password twice.
- Click Protect PDF and download the encrypted copy.
Choosing a password
- Use at least 12 characters, ideally a passphrase of several random words.
- Do not reuse passwords from other accounts.
- Send the password through a different channel than the file.
Remove a password
Use Unlock PDF with the password to create an identical copy without protection. This only works if you know the password, and nothing here can recover a forgotten one.
How strong is it?
Files are encrypted with AES-256 using the open-source qpdf engine, running locally in your browser. The password is never sent to us.
